Sunsets and sunrises offer some of the most spectacular, surreal photographic opportunities, and some people can really take advantage of them. Here are 14 of my favorite sunrises and sunsets from Flickr. Some of them use high dynamic range (HDR), and some don’t. They are in no particular order.
Obops: “Early December at Dunraven Bay” – Shot JUST before the sun went down and gave it a very dark, warm glow. The reflections in the water and the bright orange streaks in the sky are terrific. It would be nice to be able to see some detail in the dark right portion of the image.
Another by Obobs: “A Southerndown sunset” – No complaints here. The mist is amazing, and it sets the mood well. It has a nice range of oranges and pinks that compliment the hazy blues in the ocean.
Vincent de los Angeles: “The sun goes down” – Fantastic HDR captured in Xeraco, Valencia. The sun poking just behind the clouds gives them a nice glow. I enjoy the detail in the foreground weeds & grass, and the small reflecting pool in the field. The sky looks a bit dark and menacing, but it doesn’t detract from the picture too much.
Stocks Photography: “Welcome to Overworld” – This just looks like something in a fantasy movie and not real life. The greenish-yellow cast in the picture along with the small spots of intense color in the foliage on the ground really work well together.
Pablo Ch: “The road” – Great composition! The road leads the eyes straight into the ocean and up towards the heavenly light of the sun behind the clouds.
Preciouskhyatt: “Reason-no-136″ – An unplanned shot while he was walking home from work. The colors are AMAZING and are captured perfectly in the reflections on the ground. Wish I could have been there.
Novijka: “….to freeze the moment ….” – The moment definitely looks frozen. Besides the superb lighting, what really captures me is the feeling of being able to “get into” the picture. The steam from the small pond, cold morning frost, and golden “only there for a couple minutes per day” light, make it easy to vividly picture being there.
bbodien: “Arncliffe Daybreak” – The mood depicted with the initial light of the day in the valley is just great. I like the sharp shadows in the fields, and the glowing light on the left that’s perfectly captures just before the sun would overpower the scene.
Patrick Smith Photography: “Hanalei Mist – Kauai, Hawaii” – The color range in this picture make it look like it’s an HDR: stunning! The crystal clear reflections of clouds in the wet sand, and lush green mountain ranges are perfect. Those tiny waterfalls far off in the distance are a nice touch too.
Peter Van Allen: “Icarus Undone” – Absolutely love the concept and this image! Peter really made a great HDR without making the photo look unrealistic. Golden-warm sunset, plus the ultra-sharp, grayish-blue rocks are a great combo. The feather is icing on the cake.
Another by Peter Van Allen: “Oh What a Night” – My comments can’t do the photo much justice. Amazing pinks & oranges in the sky, along with an interesting foreground object. Great work!
Katarina 2353: “Idyllic” – I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be looking at: it’s all great. The sun is prominent, but not overpowering, the crashing waves add some motion to the photo, and the dark rocky beach adds a boundary to the limitless ocean.
MorBCN: “Barcelona Sunset HDR” – One of my favorite sunset HDRs. There’s simply so much going on in the scene, but it’s pretty easy to imagine everyone there is enjoying the same thing: the wonderful sunset. HDRs with people are tough too.
~jjjohn~: “December Sand” – Last, but definitely not least, is this spectacular sunset snapped in Manduria, Italy. The cool & warm colors in the sky compliment eachother well, and the wooden path leads the eye right out to the beautiful sky.
That’s all for this round.
