How to tag thousands of photos

In a previous post I mentioned that I never used tags. I know that tags are an important and useful feature of PSE. Perhaps someone can give me some ideas on how to go about tagging thousands of photos of wildflowers and ferns. I took photos of flowers and ferns many years before I got my first digital camera and before PSE. I had the photos printed and they fill many albums. When desktop scanners became available for my first PC, I began scanning the photos. I named the files by flower/fern name with a color initial and placed them in folders and subfolders by state/state park/date. I bought my first digital camera and purchased PSE 1. With the digital camera it became easy to escalate the number of photos I took. I am now using PSE8 and my 3rd digital camera. I have no idea how to go about tagging all those photos. It almost seems like I need a tag for each individual unique name, creating a tag tree like the folder tree I’ve been using. Perhaps it would be better but it would take me an awful long time to tag all those photos. I’m up in years and don’t want to spend that much time on bookkeeping. I’d rather enjoy the flowers while I still can.

Maybe I’m missing something here. Is there a simple way to do this?
