After initially being unable to import anything at all, I fumbled around until I tricked it into working. It imported my 37,000+ images overnight, I ran a 1:1 preview on the entire library the next night, and seemed to be working well.
My issues so far have only been with importing. Today I started with a CF card full of images from my 50D. Went through the motions, but nothing imported (or notified me as such). Quit LR3, tried again, went off without a hitch.
Later today I tried to import about 100 images off of a little Canon point & shoot. Again, it appeared to work, but nothing imported (I mean, it didn’t complain. I didn’t see any photos being imported or progress bars, etc). Restarted it, it worked. Sort of.
It imported 50 images, then just kinda hung. Wasn’t really locked up, but stuck on importing. Restarted it, tried again, it discovered that those previous 50 appeared to be dupes, than started on the rest. Got through about 4, then hung again.
These are coming off of the memory cards through the card reader in my Canon printer. Perhaps it doesn’t enjoy working with the printer as a card reader, I dunno. I -do- know my LR3 beta testing is over – I don’t mind finding issues, but if I can barely get images in to work with, it’s not worth it. About the only complaint I could make once I got in and worked on my images was that again, thumbnail scrolling through my entire library is smooth, but stuttery. Not enjoyable. It’s worthless in LR2, but whaddya do.
I did tried Aperture 3 last week, I was impressed at how quickly it rendered previews and scrolled through thousands of images. It was actually stunning compared to LR. But alas, I seemed to have the same issue numerous other Aperture users are experiencing, problems with memory and hung processes. LR2 works perfectly in function, as does Photoshop CS3 and basically everything else on my Mac, so I guess I blame the apps. LR2 is great, but if they get Aperture 3 ironed out, that could be enough to make me climb back aboard the mothership with Cap’n Jobs.
